How does a solar hot water system work?

Solar hot water systems absorb the sun’s thermal energy through one of two methods – flat plate or evacuated tube collectors – warming up your water and sending it to a storage system for later use.

Flat plate collectors are glass covered and contain copper piping, which is directly connected to a water storage tank on the roof. The sun heats cool water within the pipes which is then stored in the tank. Evacuated tube collectors, on the other hand, consist of large glass tubes fused at both ends, with copper piping inside. Connected to a slow flow circulation pump, hot water is then forced into a storage tank below.

Whilst both methods sound quite similar, they have distinctly different characteristics and therefore benefits. Evacuated tube collectors are often considered superior because they can use the air’s humidity to heat, rather than relying solely on direct sunlight. They’re more efficient, durable and cheaper to repair when something breaks; however, these benefits come at a premium price.
