How Does a Hybrid System Work?

Similar to a standard grid-tie solar power system, a hybrid alternative converts sunlight into energy using a series of panels, inverters, wiring and switches. With a standard system you can only use the energy produced straight away or else it’s fed back into the grid in return for a feed-in tariff. When sunlight disappears, you’re reliant on buying electricity back from the grid at a much higher rate.

Hybrid solar systems use a battery to store any excess energy produced during sunlight hours so you can save it for a rainy day – or when night-time descends. Once your battery’s fully charged, you’ll still be able to feed excess into the grid, however there’ll be far fewer occasions when you’ll need to buy it back!

When looking at solar for investment purposes, it’s important to weigh up the additional cost of a hybrid system against the savings made from reducing your grid dependency. To help with the calculations, reach out to us at Active Solar & Gas.
